Online Yorùbá classes for adults: what to look for, and how Soro works

Quick answer

The best online Yorùbá classes for adults give you plenty of time to speak, put you with people at your level, use a fluent and friendly teacher, and fit around work and family. If you already understand Yorùbá, choose a small conversation class rather than a beginner course that starts with the alphabet. Soro runs live, one-hour speaking classes in groups of three, every week.

  5. Questions people ask

Learning Yorùbá as an adult is different from learning it as a child. You're busy. You may already understand a lot. You probably feel more self-conscious about mistakes than a ten-year-old would. And you want your time and money to turn into real conversations, not certificates.

This guide covers what to look for in an online Yorùbá class, the main types of class you'll come across, and exactly how Soro works, so you can decide what fits.

What to look for in an online Yorùbá class

1. How much of the hour you'll actually speak

This is the question most people forget to ask. In a one-hour class of fifteen, each learner gets at most four minutes to talk. In a group of three, it's up to twenty. If your goal is to speak, talking time matters more than anything else on this list.

2. Whether you'll be with people at your level

A class that's too easy wastes your time; one that's too hard makes you go quiet. If you understand Yorùbá but don't speak it well, a class that starts with the alphabet will bore you, and a group of fluent speakers will intimidate you. Ask how learners are grouped. If you're not sure of your level, try our Yorùbá level self-check.

3. Who teaches, and how they correct you

You want someone fluent, patient and good at keeping a conversation going. Just as important is how they correct mistakes: gently and in the flow, not by stopping you every sentence. For adults who've been laughed at for their Yorùbá before, this makes or breaks the experience.

4. Conversation or grammar

Some classes teach reading, writing and grammar. Others focus on speaking. Both are valid, but they suit different goals. If you want to talk with your parents, in-laws or children, pick a class built around conversation.

5. A schedule that survives a busy week

The best class is the one you'll actually attend. Evening and weekend slots suit most working adults. If you live abroad, check which time zone the class times are in.

6. Regular sessions with the same people

Weekly sessions with the same small group build momentum. You get to know each other, the fear wears off faster, and someone notices when you don't show up.

7. A low-risk way to try

Look for a single trial class, ideally with a refund if it isn't for you, before committing to a month or a term.

8. Clear rules

Read the terms before you pay: what happens if you miss a class, whether you can change your time slot, and how renewals work. Good programmes make these easy to find.

How Soro works

Soro is a live speaking programme for adults who already understand Yorùbá but don't speak it with confidence. Here's exactly what you get.

  • Groups of three. You speak with two others at your level, so everyone gets real talking time.
  • One hour, every week, online. You pick a weekly class window when you join. The open windows change with guide availability, so the sign-up page always shows the schedule that's available now.
  • A friendly, fluent guide. Your Atọ́nísọ̀nà keeps the conversation going and corrects you kindly. No one will make fun of you.
  • Conversation, not grammar lectures. Each session is a conversation that stands on its own, not a lesson in a sequence.
  • A group chat. Your group stays in touch between sessions.
  • Quick start. After you pay, Soro emails your group and meeting details within 24 hours. A group starts once it has three people; if yours hasn't filled within seven days, you'll be offered a place in the next group forming.

Good to know before you join

  • Missed classes aren't made up. A class you miss uses that week's credit, unless Soro cancelled or moved it. Because every session stands on its own, you won't fall behind, but pick a slot you can keep.
  • Your time slot is fixed. You choose it when you join and can't change it yourself, so pick one you can keep.
  • Renew on time to keep your group. When your classes run out, you have 24 hours to renew and keep your place.
  • Paying. Pay by card online, or by bank transfer (activated once the team confirms your payment).

Is Soro right for you?

Soro is a good fit if:

  • you understand Yorùbá but freeze, mix in English or switch to English when it's your turn to speak;
  • you want to speak with family, in-laws or your children with confidence;
  • you'd rather practise in a small, judgement-free group than in front of a big class;
  • you can commit to one hour a week.

Soro isn't the right fit yet if you're a complete beginner who doesn't understand Yorùbá, or your main goal is reading, writing or an exam. A structured beginner course or a tutor will suit you better for now.
